2026 Young Citizen of the Year

03 February 2026

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—I would like to recognise Alyssa Wharton, recipient of the City of Newcastle Young Citizen of the Year Award, for her exceptional leadership and contribution to community sport. At just 21 years of age, Alyssa has already made a remarkable impact on junior cricket across our community. She has been acknowledged for her dedication to mentoring young players, organising local carnivals, and serving as a Cricket Blast Coordinator. Through her leadership, Alyssa grew the Cricket Blast program from just eight participants to more than 50 in only three seasons, creating greater opportunities for children to engage with the sport. Alyssa has also been a strong advocate for inclusion and representation in cricket. As the only female umpire in the Newcastle Junior Cricket Association, she has championed the introduction of junior girls' games, helping to increase visibility and encourage greater participation by young women in cricket. In recognition of her leadership and advocacy, Alyssa was also named Cricket NSW's 2025 Young Leader of the Year. Her passion, commitment, and drive are truly inspiring, and she is a deserving recipient of this honour.
