Blankets for Elephants

18 March 2026

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—I would like to recognise the Belmont branch of the Country Women's Association for their compassionate and creative project supporting rescued elephants in Northern Thailand. Over recent months, members of the Belmont CWA have been working together to knit large blankets for elephants living in wildlife refuges. Many of these animals have been rescued after enduring mistreatment and difficult working lives, and the blankets help keep them warm during the colder months in northern Thailand. The project brings together the skills and generosity of many members. Small knitted pieces are created using leftover wool and are later carefully joined together to form the enormous blankets. The process is a true labour of love, with some blankets taking up to a year to complete. One dedicated member, Catherine, carefully assembles the pieces to bring each colourful creation together. This thoughtful initiative reflects the compassion and community spirit that the CWA is known for. Through their work, the Belmont branch is helping provide comfort and care to animals who now have the opportunity to live safely and peacefully. I commend the Belmont CWA for their kindness, dedication and generosity.
