Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—I would like to recognise the Bloody Long Walk, which took place on Sunday 24 August and truly lived up to its name. Covering 35 kilometres, the event is a test of endurance that also serves a powerful purpose in raising awareness and funds for mitochondrial disease. The journey began at Redhead Beach before following the Fernleigh Track and winding through Whitebridge and Dudley in the electorate of Charlestown. From there, participants continued into Adamstown, through the city of Newcastle, along the coastline at Merewether and Bar Beach, before finally finishing at Foreshore Park. Starting at 6.30am, it was a long and demanding day, but one filled with determination and community spirit. This year, the event raised an extraordinary $225,162, with every cent directed to the Mito Foundation to support people living with mitochondrial disease, fund research into treatments and cures, and deliver education and advocacy programs. Events like the Bloody Long Walk are important reminders of the strength and compassion within our community. They challenge us physically, bring people together, and contribute to causes that change lives. Congratulations to all who took part in this remarkable event.
