Charlestown Azzurri

11 September 2025

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—The Charlestown Azzurri have secured their second NPL Women's Northern NSW Premiership title in what was a thrilling and hard-fought season. This remarkable back-to-back win has also seen them named National Premier League Champions for 2025, a historic moment for the club and for women's football in our region. I had the opportunity to attend the match at Darling Street Oval and to take part in the coin toss. It was a wonderful game to watch and a true showcase of the skill and determination of both sides. Charlestown faced fierce rivals, the Maitland Magpies, in a very close contest. The game remained on edge until Melina Ayres scored a stunning goal from 35 metres out, sealing a 1–0 victory for Charlestown. Under the guidance of Coach Heath Whyte, the Azzurri have once again proven themselves as a force in the competition. Their achievement is not only a proud moment for the club, but also a reflection of the growing strength and visibility of women's football across our region. Congratulations to Charlestown Azzurri on this historic achievement. The whole community is proud to celebrate your success.
