Clare Wheeler

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—From her early days playing football in the Hunter, I am proud to recognise Clare Wheeler for her remarkable success on the international stage. A former Hunter Sports High School student and Jets Academy product, Clare now plays professionally for UK club Everton, competing full-time in the Women's Super League. Her passion for football began at a young age, at a time when girls' pathways were only just emerging. Starting out playing under 12s, Clare credits her early years at Adamstown with sparking a lifelong love of the game and giving her the chance to simply play. Clare's development continued through Northern NSW, Emerging Jets and W-League selections before she moved to Sydney, where she claimed a premiership with Sydney FC in the 2020–21 season. Later that year, Clare left home to play overseas with Danish side Fortuna Hjørring and made her debut with the national team. She represented Australia at the Asian Cup in 2022 and now returns to the tournament for a second time, with a World Cup and Olympic Games already under her belt. I wish Clare and the Matildas every success in the competition ahead.
