Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—I'd like to commend veterinary nurse Darcy Baltussen for his extraordinary efforts during the recent floods in the Hunter region. When retired thoroughbred Pete became trapped in floodwater at Millers Forest and began to suffer a life-threatening bleed, staff from Hunter Equine Veterinary Services acted quickly to save him. With vehicle access cut off, the team had to think on their feet. Darcy waded through 200 metres of floodwater, guiding a kayak carrying emergency surgical equipment to reach Pete. Once there, Darcy assisted with a standing surgery in incredibly challenging conditions to stop the bleeding and stabilise the horse. His calm decision-making, clinical skill and determination under pressure quite literally saved Pete's life. The horse is now recovering well and continuing to mend. This incident highlights the commitment and courage of those working in animal care, particularly during emergencies. Darcy's actions were not only brave, but a clear example of going above and beyond in the service of others—human or animal. I thank Darcy and the team at Hunter Equine for their dedication, compassion and quick thinking during such a difficult time. Their work is deeply appreciated by the Charlestown electorate and wider community.
