Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—I would like to recognise Dr Alex Callen for her valuable contribution to protecting biodiversity in our region and for her commitment to caring for our local environment. Dr Callen is a conservation scientist at the University of Newcastle whose work focuses on supporting threatened species and strengthening local ecosystems. Her research into the endangered green and golden bell frog at Muddy Lake in Dora Creek is helping protect one of the last remaining local populations of this iconic Australian species. Through detailed monitoring and habitat-focused conservation work, Dr Callen and her team are improving understanding of the pressures facing amphibians and identifying practical ways to support their survival. This work plays an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, which benefit our community as a whole. Beyond her research, Dr Callen is passionate about connecting people with science and the natural world. She actively encourages community involvement in conservation and works to make scientific knowledge accessible, engaging and relevant to everyday life. Dr Callen's dedication helps ensure our region's natural environment is protected for future generations, and her work is a valuable asset to our community.
