Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—A review of scientific literature published in Nature Review Urology has sought to shed light on the causes of a decline in male fertility over the past fifty years. The study explored how certain activities such as high-altitude hiking and sleep apnoea impact male fertility. The lead researcher was Dr. Tessa Lord, a senior lecturer at the University of Newcastle, a member of the Hunter Medical Research Institute's Infertility and Reproduction Research Program and a resident of the Charlestown electorate. A reproductive biologist specialising in spermatogenesis and spermatogonial stem cell biology, Dr Lord earned her Bachelor of Biotechnology at the University of Newcastle, went on to do honours, and achieve a PhD. After postdoctoral training at Washington State University, Dr Lord established her research program at the University of Newcastle in 2019. The research goals of Dr Lord and her team aims to improve fertility outcomes today and also help safeguard the reproductive health of generations to come. I congratulate Dr Lord on her work so far and wish her and her team all the best in their future research endeavours.
