Emily Whelan

18 September 2025

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—I would like to recognise Emily Whelan, a talented high jumper from New Lambton who has reached a career-best milestone with her selection in the senior Australian athletics team. Emily will make her debut on the world stage at the World Championships in Tokyo, a proud achievement for both her and our community. Emily's athletics journey began at the Adamstown–New Lambton Athletics Club, where her talent and determination quickly became clear. In 2017, she represented Australia at the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas, winning a silver medal and setting the stage for a promising future in the sport. This year, Emily started the season with a personal best jump of 1.91 metres, a mark she went on to equal at the national titles in Perth. Alongside this consistency, she secured a national bronze medal and gained valuable international experience competing overseas, all of which has helped pave the way to her World Championships debut. Emily's achievements reflect years of dedication and hard work, and she stands as an inspiration to young athletes across our region. I congratulate Emily Whelan on this remarkable accomplishment and wish her every success representing Australia.
