Hunter Wildfires and Hunter Sports High School

04 June 2025

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—A new partnership between Hunter Sports High School and the Hunter Wildfires is set to create stronger pathways for young rugby players in our region. The collaboration will expand the school's rugby program, giving students access to elite training and development opportunities without the need to relocate or attend boarding school. With 28 current participants and plans to welcome 18 new players each year, the program is growing into a significant local talent hub. The school‑based initiative will be led by Hunter Wildfires first grade coach Scott Coleman and supported by NSW Rugby Union. Students will benefit from high-level coaching, skills development, and the chance to compete at a range of tournaments throughout the year. As part of their weekly timetable, participants will complete two 90‑minute sessions focused on rugby, alongside a dedicated strength and conditioning component. This integrated approach supports both athletic development and educational engagement, helping students build discipline, confidence and resilience. This is an exciting step forward for school rugby in the Hunter. I commend both Hunter Sports High and the Hunter Wildfires for investing in the future of the game and the young athletes who will shape it.
