Kumano Kodo Trail Trekkers

29 May 2025

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—This week, 14 dedicated Hunter women are taking on the incredible challenge of the Kumano Kodo Trail in Japan as part of the Jenny's Place 2025 adventure trekking series. Among them are two outstanding locals I'd like to recognise—Ali Kimmorley from Warners Bay and Abene Charleson from Merewether. Ali and Abene have spent months preparing for this journey, training for the physical and mental challenge of hiking 85 kilometres over seven days. The Kumano Kodo is a historic and spiritually significant trail, known for its steep inclines, high altitudes and stunning natural beauty. Along the way, the group will experience remote villages, ancient shrines and the spectacular Nachi-no-Otaki, Japan's tallest waterfall. This trek is part of a fundraising effort for Jenny's Place, a local organisation that provides care and support for women and children affected by domestic and family violence. The courage and commitment shown by Ali, Abene and their fellow trekkers reflects the values of compassion and community. Thank you to Ali and Abene for being part of this important cause. We wish you all the best as you take on this extraordinary journey in support of women and families in need.
