Marine Rescue Commissioner's Citation

03 February 2026

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—I would like to recognise Rick Nevile and Geraldine Allen for their outstanding service and selfless dedication to our community, following their receipt of a Marine Rescue Commissioner's Citation. Rick and Geraldine were honoured for their roles in a highly challenging offshore rescue operation in 2019, carried out in treacherous conditions off the coast of Newcastle. During the operation, volunteers faced extreme weather, including winds of up to 90 kilometres per hour and swells of two to three metres, demonstrating exceptional courage, professionalism, and technical expertise. Rick's leadership and skill on the water were instrumental to the success of the rescue effort, while Geraldine's calm and experienced coordination from the unit's radio base ensured critical communication was maintained throughout the operation. Together, their actions exemplified the highest standards of Marine Rescue service. In addition to navigating dangerous conditions, the volunteers involved also carried the sombre responsibility of retrieving deceased victims and returning them promptly and respectfully to their grieving families. Rick and Geraldine's commitment reflects a profound sense of service and compassion. Their dedication strengthens our community and highlights the vital role Marine Rescue volunteers play in keeping our coastline safe.
