Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—Professor Matt Dun from the University of Newcastle has been honoured with the Emerging Leadership Award at the 2025 AFR Higher Education Awards in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to brain cancer research. Professor Dun's leadership in this field has been both transformational and deeply personal. Inspired by his daughter's diagnosis with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), also known as diffuse midline glioma (DMG), he has dedicated his career to improving outcomes for children and families affected by this devastating disease. DIPG and DMG are the most lethal forms of childhood cancer, and his work has provided both hope and progress in an area of urgent need. Through his vision and determination, Professor Dun has attracted more than $40 million in research funding. This support is enabling advances in scientific understanding, treatment development, and care, with a profound impact on families across Australia and beyond. He has also been instrumental in fostering collaboration and advocacy, ensuring that the voices of patients and their families remain at the centre of research efforts. This award is a fitting recognition of Professor Dun's dedication, innovation, and leadership. Congratulations to Professor Matt Dun on this remarkable and well-deserved honour.
