Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—I would like to recognise Professor Matthew Dun on being awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division, in recognition of his outstanding service to haematology and oncology research. Following the diagnosis of his two-year-old daughter, Josephine Laura Dun, with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) in 2018, Professor Dun transformed personal tragedy into a powerful commitment to helping others. At the time of Josephine's diagnosis, there were no effective treatments for DIPG. Determined to make a difference, Professor Dun drew on his expertise as a biomedical scientist, alongside his wife, Dr Phoebe Hindley, to ensure their family's experience would lead to lasting change. Through his work at the University of Newcastle and the Hunter Medical Research Institute, Professor Dun established a dedicated DIPG and Diffuse Midline Glioma research program, advancing global understanding of these rare cancers. His team has since identified two drug treatments. Professor Dun and Dr Hindley also founded RUN DIPG, a charity supporting affected families and driving research into childhood brain cancer. This honour is a fitting recognition of Professor Dun's compassion, leadership and tireless dedication to improving outcomes for children and families worldwide.
