Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—The loss of a child is something that no family should ever have to endure, yet Trisha and Stuart Hughes have continued to face unimaginable heartbreak with remarkable strength and purpose. After losing their daughter, Amber, just before her 18th birthday to diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, or DIPG, Trisha and Stuart made the decision to continue fighting for the cause that became so deeply personal to their family. Recently, they undertook a gruelling multi‑day trek along the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea alongside their son, his partner, and seven close friends as part of their fundraising efforts for RUN DIPG. The charity was founded by Newcastle biomedical scientist Matthew Dun, who I have spoken about in this place on numerous occasions, and his wife, Phoebe Hindley, after they, too, lost their daughter to the disease. Through their determination, Trisha and Stuart are honouring Amber's memory in the most meaningful way possible: helping drive awareness, hope and vital research for families facing DIPG.
